About Us

About us

The first thing we want you to know about The Barn is that all are welcome. We firmly believe that God desires for every person He created to know and experience the joy and freedom that can be found in a relationship with Jesus Christ. No matter who you are, what you've done, or what season of life you're in, God's love is for you. Our prayer is that anyone who walks through our doors will experience the unconditional love, grace, and forgiveness that God offers.

At the Barn, our goal is to gather together to grow in the Lord through Biblical teaching and worship. We aim to be firmly planted in His Word, and to serve God and others through ministry opportunities both inside and outside these Barn doors.

What We Believe

We believe The Bible is the inspired and infallible, authoritative Word of God. We believe that the sixty-six books of the Old and New Testaments were divinely inspired of God and are our sole basis for faith. They are the complete, full and final authority on all matters of faith and practice for the Christian Church.

We believe that there is one God, eternally existent in three persons: The Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. We believe that all things were created by Him and for Him.

We believe Jesus Christ is God, in His virgin birth, in His sinless life, in His miracles, in His death that paid for our sin through His shed blood. Also in His bodily resurrection, in His ascension/rising up to the right hand of the Father and in His personal return in power and glory.

We believe as a result of the Fall, all people are sinners by nature and for the salvation of lost and sinful humanity, regeneration by the Holy Spirit is essential, and that repentance from sin and acceptance of Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior is the only way to come into a relationship with God. He is the only mediator between God and man.

We believe in the present and working ministry of the Holy Spirit. That He dwells in and enables the born-again believer to comprehend and apply the Word of God; to live a godly life; and that His power and gifts are at work and available to believers today.

We believe in the resurrection of both the saved and the lost; they who are saved unto the resurrection of life and united with God for all eternity, and they who are lost to eternal separation from God.

We believe it is important to uphold the scriptural practices of the early church. Therefore, we hold to the practice of water baptism and participating regularly in Communion. We do not believe that either of these practices is essential for salvation, but that they serve as a witness of our living faith in Christ.

History of Calvary Chapel (The Barn)

CCBI was established in 1985 through a coffee house ministry in fellowship with Calvary Chapel Costa Mesa in California. It was held in the loft of a building affectionately known as "The Barn," which, indeed, was originally built as a barn, but that went on to have a rich history as a gathering place for the Blue Island community.  The Barn hosted youth events, concerts, and once even had a live farm animal lending library!

The coffee house eventually moved out to different locations throughout the years, but things came full circle in 2004, as the Lord led the CCBI leadership back to The Barn to purchase the building where the church now resides.

How to know Jesus?

In reality there's the Good News and bad news. The bad news is that something has separated us from God. And that something is called sin. Isaiah 59:2 says But your iniquities (sins) have separated you from God; And your sins have hidden His face from you, So that He will not hear.

Romans 3:23 says for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God. In other words we are all sinners.

The Bible also says the wages of sin is death. Romans 6:23 For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord. So without remedy we would be destined to die and be eternally separated from God but, notice the second part of the above verse. We can have the gift of eternal life through Jesus...

But is it enough to just recognize we are sinners. No, we must repent as well Acts 3:19 Repent, then, and turn to God, so that your sins may be wiped out, that times of refreshing may come from the Lord. Repenting is asking God to forgive you for being a sinner, turning and walking away from sin and walking with Jesus and the wonderful plans He has for your new life.

The Good News is: if you're genuine in asking how can I know God then God is drawing you to Himself. God has designed you to be in relationship with Himself. So how do we do that? By accepting the free gift Jesus offers us by the sacrifice He made on our behalf on the Cross. He took the penalty of sin in our place. The Bible says: 2 Corinthians 5:21 He made Him who knew no sin to be sin on our behalf, so that we might become the righteousness of God in Him.

The Word of God also says 1 Timothy 2:5 For, There is one God and one Mediator who can reconcile God and humanity, "the man Christ Jesus. And also says Acts 4:12 speaking of Jesus:  And there is salvation in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given among men by which we must be saved."

So if we understand we are separated from God because we are sinners who must repent since the wages of sin is death. And we also understand Jesus is the solution for sin and we accept the free gift that is offered by Him, then scripture give us a wonderful promise in Romans 10:9 If you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord, and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved from the punishment of sin. Guilt, shame and sin are a heavy burden to bear but if we trust in Jesus, we can be set free in Christ.

So now that you understand with your mind you must accept with your heart. This brings a person into a living relationship with Jesus.

If that's you, then what you need to do now is pray to Jesus. Confess you are a sinner, ask for forgiveness, ask Jesus into your life to lead you. Then start looking for a sound, Bible-based church, where you can grow in your walk with Jesus. . . . that in the dispensation of the fullness of the times
He might gather together in one all things in Christ, both which are in heaven
and which are on earth—in Him.
